Behind the Image
Some photographs require more than being in the right place at the right time. They demand years of experience, careful planning, and a vision that brings every element together. Deep within Oregon’s remote Alvord Desert, an extraordinary setting was chosen for a photographic expedition featuring one of aviation’s most iconic aircraft, the legendary Douglas DC-3.

Having photographed this aircraft many times before, the challenge was to reveal something entirely new. With the help of a longtime friend and the plane’s pilot, a plan was set in motion to fly the DC-3 into the vast desert wilderness, where its unmistakable silhouette could be showcased against a spectacular backdrop of rugged mountains and endless open sky. The remote location offered the perfect canvas, free from distractions, allowing the aircraft and the surrounding landscape to command the scene.

Positioned on the expansive dry lakebed, the DC-3 revealed an impressive perspective from behind. Its enormous silver wings stretched across the horizon, while the distinctive tail and polished fuselage created a striking composition against the distant mountain range. From this angle, the aircraft’s incredible engineering and timeless design took on an entirely different character, its powerful presence emphasized by the sheer scale and isolation of the desert.

As dawn approached, Mother Nature delivered a display beyond anything that could have been planned. Massive storm clouds rolled across the mountains, shrouding the jagged peaks in deep shades of blue and violet. Then, for a brief moment, the rising sun broke through an opening in the clouds, casting an extraordinary crimson glow across the desert hills. Warm, fiery light illuminated the rugged landscape, while the DC-3 remained bathed in the cool blue tones of the approaching storm.

With the morning light changing and storm clouds constantly shifting, every passing moment brought a new combination of color, shadow, and atmosphere. The aircraft’s reflective surfaces mirrored the cool tones of the dawn sky, while the illuminated mountains provided a dramatic backdrop. Capturing the perfect balance required patience, precision, and the instinct to recognize that fleeting instant when every element fell into place.

There was something remarkable about seeing this historic aircraft resting in such an isolated setting. A symbol of aviation’s pioneering era, the DC-3 was built for adventure, carrying generations of travelers across distant horizons. Against the raw beauty of the desert, its presence seemed to embody that same enduring spirit of discovery and the desire to venture beyond the familiar.
