Death Valley, California
There is something about sand dunes that I find especially captivating. The sensual slopes and textures provide a soft windblown appearance–although in reality, there are fewer areas that are harsher. I had searched the dunes in early June looking for “the shot.” There are only a couple of roughly 30-minute windows at sunrise and at sunset to work with. So it’s important to find a great location and not waste what the day gives you. During most of the day, the dunes lack character, but when the sun hides and the shadows start filling in along the waves in the sand, it’s truly a spectacular show. Hiking to this ridge, careful to not disturb the sand, I set up, kneeled down, and pressed the shutter. Being out in the desert, isolated from the world–capturing the barren landscape was as exhilarating as it was spiritual.
