In days past, cane fires like this one were a common sight for Cairns residents. Now however, with the practice of cane being harvested green, they are a real rarity. In order to get the shot I wanted, I had to set up right in the path of this blustering inferno. To be surrounded by the crackling cane and billowing smoke, and at times recoiling from the physical force of the heat, was an amazing experience.
