Lake Superior, Minnesota
After over-nighting in sub-zero conditions, I awoke well before first light in order to hike to the shores of Lake Superior in the hopes of capturing a spectacular dawn. I knew I wasn’t going to be disappointed when the first slivers of dawn pierced the horizon with a brilliant hue that promised a killer sunrise. After fresh falls overnight, the snow was a pristine veil over the ground and the ochre dawn illuminated the scene in a surreal contrast of fire and ice. This is one of the purest moments I have ever experienced–the silence, the solitude, and the feeling of being totally isolated from everything in the world except Nature herself. I was completely at peace on this remote island, and it’s moments like this that I live for.
