La Jolla, California Being on the ocean shores has always had a magical feel to me. I needed to capture that on film. I set the alarm for 5:00 am, and hiked down to the pier. There are so many different options to the perspective to shoot the pier from—cliff tops, side-on, from the top, etc. There was a thick fog in this morning, and no color at all at sunrise. I used this to my advantage, and chose an unusual perspective underneath the pier, like looking out through a keyhole. The fog muffled the sound of the ocean, and provided soft, even light to shoot. With strong composition and muted painter’s colors, this image captured the mood of this misty summer’s morning.
