Page, Arizona I noticed this formation while I was out filming for “From the Edge with Peter Lik” and knew I had to return to get it. You have to look up to see it and unless it’s pointed out to you, you’d never know it was there. The other challenge in shooting it is the sand being blown down into the canyon from the desert above – it makes the job much more difficult and is extremely tough on the gear. The perfect heart shape is formed by two outcroppings of rock – one 10 feet further back than the other, so you have to align them perfectly so as to be able to see it. With the morning light pouring through the slot canyon from the distance, I positioned my tripod precisely and the heart just lit up for me. Magic! I’m always fascinated by shapes formed in nature and this was one I knew I had to capture for my galleries. So “Desire” is really the perfect name for it. You can imagine how I felt when I pressed the shutter – once I knew that I had it in the tin I was completely blown away.
