When shooting landscapes, my whole life revolves around the weather–it can quickly change an ordinary scene into something dramatic. I was shooting different angles of Bryce Canyon, searching the back roads, when I noticed this massive storm brewing. Combing the area to find a point of interest, I discovered this vintage shack. It told a story of its own, but as Mother Nature prepared to unleash this storm, I couldn’t help feeling that in different times, this would have been my storm escape. The scene was brilliant with the bleached, flowing grass and the magnificent sky rolling in toward me. Not long after shooting, the winds kicked up and a torrential downpour fell from the clouds above. Shots like this are why I do what I do: to capture the moment, the mood, and the spirit of the place.
