Portland, Oregon There is something magical about fall – the colors, the smells – Mother Nature really displaying her glory. Isolating that one special tree was my real challenge – to make this image special. The vibrant colors of this Japanese maple blew my mind – deep reds and oranges. I used a shallow depth of field to really bring attention to the intricate leaves in the foreground – not to compete with the background. The green moss and dark branches popped the colors even more. I needed total calm for this image – as these leaves perched right on the tip of the delicate branches would move even in the slightest breeze. It took four separate trips in early morning to capture the true magic of this stunning maple. A slow shutter speed and even low light provided the perfect conditions I needed. Silence and total calm surrounded me when I pressed the shutter.
